SUÈVE, EDMOND DE, lieutenant in the Régiment de Carignan and co-seigneur of Sainte-Anne de la Perade; b. some time between 1617 and 1620; buried 1 March 1707. Nothing certain is known about his origins or his life before he came to Canada.
When he arrived in 1665, Edmond de Suève was a lieutenant in Pierre de Saint-Ours’ company in the Régiment de Carignan. In 1668 he decided to settle in Canada and lived for about two years with Thomas Lanouguère* at Champlain, at the home of the seigneur of the region, François Chorel de Saint-Romain, dit d’Orvilliers. In association with Lanouguère he acquired from Michel Gamelain* on 29 Sept. 1670 the seigneury of Sainte-Anne, half a league in frontage and a league in depth; the two purchasers received the title-deed to it on 29 Oct. 1672.
On 10 Feb. 1674, at 29 years of age, Lanouguère was appointed commandant at Montreal to replace François-Marie Perrot*, who had been imprisoned in the Château Saint-Louis at Quebec; Lanouguère died four years later. These circumstances and the roving inclination of the settlers, smitten with adventure and avid for peltries, explain Suève’s failure in settling people on his lands. He was ruined in the attempt.
Intendant Duchesneau* asked for a gratuity for “the Sieur de Suève, a 60-year-old bachelor who was a lieutenant, who had always been thought to have some fortune, and who has fallen this year into great distress.” This text, dated 13 Nov. 1680, confirms the co-seigneur’s approximate year of birth, contrary to the census of 1681 which gives his age as 50. Apparently the favour requested by the intendant took the form of a fur-trading licence which Suève shared with Jean Desbrieux and some other traders.
According to his burial certificate Suève died at Sainte-Anne de la Pérade at 90 years of age. He made two wills in 1684 and a third in 1695, to which he added a codicil in 1703. The first two were probably made before he took up arms again as captain of the Sorel shore at the time of the expedition by Governor de La Barre (Le Febvre*) against the Iroquois.
