SENET, dit Laliberté, NICOLAS, corporal, royal notary, son of Pierre and Suzanne Vanier, of Notre-Dame-de-Vitry (Champagne); baptized 1670; buried 17 Jan. 1732.
On 10 May 1689, at Boucherville, when he was a corporal in the army, Senet married Gertrude Daunet; they had 12 children.
In November 1698 he was secretary to the Seigneurs of Montreal. In 1704 he received from Intendant Beauharnois* de La Chaussaye his first commission as a notary, which gave him jurisdiction in the area of Pointe-aux-Trembles and as far as the lower end of the island of Montreal, as well as in the seigneuries of Repentigny, Lachenaye, Île Jésus, Île Sainte-Thérèse, Rivière-des-Prairies, Saint-Sulpice, and Chambly. On 18 June 1706 Intendant Jacques Raudot granted him another commission which extended his radius of action to the other parishes of the jurisdiction of Montreal where there was no notary. On 29 June 1721 he received from Intendant Bégon* a third commission which gave him authority throughout the government of Montreal, except in the town itself. The last minute in Senet’s registry, preserved in the Archives judiciaires of Montreal, bears the date 28 Dec. 1731.
From 1706 to 1708 he had also acted as court officer. During 1709 he served as soldier of the watch under the orders of the Sieur François-Marie Bouat, lieutenant of the marshalcy of New France.
He died at Pointe-aux-Trembles (Montreal), where he appears to have had his permanent residence.
