HAMARE (Hamard) DE LA BORDE, JEAN-BAPTISTE-JULIEN, lawyer, merchant, attorney of the provost and admiralty courts of Quebec; b. 29 June 1693 in Paris, son of Julien Hamare and Gratiane Moreau; d. probably after 1729.

Julien Hamare de La Borde, who was a lawyer in the parlement of Paris, arrived in New France before 19 Nov. 1720, since on that date, before the notary La Cetière, he signed his contract of marriage with Geneviève Lambert. They had a son, who died in 1721, and a daughter, Geneviève-Louise, who was baptized at Quebec in 1723. As soon as he arrived in the colony, Hamare seems to have engaged in fur-trading, for according to a lawsuit started in 1723 and settled in 1724 he had sold furs in the amount of 1,200 livres to Louis Lambert in 1721.

On 10 Feb. 1722 the king appointed Hamare attorney of the provost court of Quebec, and on 12 March of the same year, on the presentation of the Comte de Toulouse [Louis-Alexandre de Bourbon], he also obtained the post of attorney of the admiralty court of Quebec. On 5 October the inquiry into his character was ordered; this was done on 10 October, and two days later Hamare was admitted to the office of attorney.

Having obtained permission from the king to go to France for his personal affairs, Hamare sailed on board the Éléphant with Intendant Bégon* in September 1726. Before leaving he sold his house to Jean-Joseph Feré Duburon, a regular officer. This sale gave rise to a lawsuit in which his mother-in-law, Marie-Renée Roussel, Gabriel Lambert’s widow, was his proxy. Hamare won his case on 27 March 1730, when Duburon was obliged to pay the 2,000 livres that he owed him.

Jean-Baptiste-Julien Hamare does not seem to have returned to New France. We do not know the date of his death, but he was still living in 1729, for in that year he sent a letter to Canada.
