BASSET DU TARTRE, VINCENT, surgeon major of the Carignan-Salières regiment, with which he landed at Quebec in the summer of 1665.
As the troops of the regiment comprised 24 companies, Basset had under his orders a similar number of surgeons or fraters. Some of these practitioners remained in the colony when the regiment was disbanded. On 9 Jan. 1666 Basset appears to have accompanied Rémy de Courcelle on his expedition against the Five Nations. The militiamen of the country who helped the regular troops had their own surgeon, Jean Madry, who was subordinate to the surgeon-major. After his return to Montreal, Basset set out again for France, and there is no trace of him after 1668.
Massicotte has wondered whether he was related to the notary Bénigne Basset. Perhaps he belonged to the family of Bonaventure Basset, a Lyons doctor who is mentioned in Guy Patin’s letters in 1657.
